Ridgefest organizers hoping to generate interest

Ridgefest organizers are hopeful that as the event gets closer so will interest in a pair of activities that are planned.

The committee planning the festival met Tuesday at East Arkansas Community College and received several updates.

According to Ann Wright, who is working on the barbecue contest, which is a new event this year, two people have contacted her regarding entering the contest. Wright said that she believes interest will pick up as the event, set for Oct. 12 and 13, nears.

Ive had a couple of people come up to me at Boars Head and tell me that theyre going to enter the competition. Im hoping that as we promote the event, well get more and more interest. I just think that as we get closer to the actual event, well see more people turning in applications, said Wright.

Flawless Music Festival promotes non-violence

Known as "the positive event of the year," the drug and alcohol-free Flawless Music Festival, now in its fourth year, will kick off at noon Saturday at Truxtun Park.

Starring Chuck Brown, considered the "Godfather of Go-Go," the festival also features Annapolis-based hip-hop group Flawless as well as other area performers, including Bowie-based Planet SB, Raheem and The Grilled Lincolns, said organizer Marcus Hayes, a member of Flawless who raps under the name Awnpoynt.

Since the festival's inception four years ago, Mr. Hayes' company, Awnpoynt Productions, along with partner Niels Fromm, has been promoting peace and non-violence while helping to raise awareness of struggling families in Annapolis.

In fact, Flawless is known for rapping about some less popular themes like tackling the socio-economic divide rather than the typical raps about sex, wealth and violence.
